What is a new moon? Why should it be important to us in this contemporary, technologized world that we live in today? Why should we observe it? Let's take a quick look into it. The New Moon observation was not only "observed" by our ancestors, it was also celebrated as a time of new beginnings. Even long before Jacob became a nation, it was observed by his ancestors, and can be traced back as far as Enoch, a great grandfather of Noah, the father of Shem. Gen 5:21, 28, Gen 10:1 Numbers 28:11, The Book of Enoch

The Most High in His wisdom, created a system to measure time and seasons, that was based on the sun (Shemesh) and luminaries of the night sky, and consequently caused those who sought Him to look up toward the heavens, and up to Him. Gen 1:14

The Chodesh (moon) was used to count the days of the month, as it was naturally designed to do so having 28 to 29 phases per cycle, each representing a day of the month. The New Moon was used to determine the beginning of the month, and from there, the holy and set apart days such as the Shabbat, and later after the Exodus of the children of Yisrael; the Chodesh was used to determine the Holy Feast Days. Numbers 10:10

The New Moon, is declared by the appearing of the crescent moon, following the final Shabbat of the previous month. In some months, the crescent would appear the next day, but because this is a living calendar, it may not appear for 1 to 3 days.

If you think about it, you can see how the New Moon characterizes the beginning of creation. In the beginning, darkness covered the face of the earth, and it was void of light until The Most High declared “Let there be light” and it was so. Now with that said, consider The New Moon, a moment in the present, where the darkness of the moon mimics the darkness of the world at the precipice of creation and then the slither of light that is manifested with the New Moon, mirroring creation, and the birth of light. This is no coincidence; but was by design! In other words, The New Moon, is a witness of The Most High’s handy work, and it’s moments like this that strengthens our faith in our Creator, reaffirming His faithfulness to us, every time the New moon appears. Gen 1:1-5

In conclusion, The New Moon, is a time for the believer to reflect on The Most High Yah’s goodness and mercy from the previous month, and with thanksgiving, be propelled into the blessings and provision of the new month to come. Though many of us are under the constraints of the modern Roman Gregorian month/week calendar, we encourage you to observe The New Moon and if you can, maybe prepare a nice meal, spend time in devotion, even if all you can do is meditate on The Most High for a few minutes, and thank Him for the blessing of the new month, we encourage you to do so and be blessed by this gift from our Creator. Stay synced up and celebrate the day. Shalom.
